Survive what’s left of winter by treating yourself to a taste of summer at the Cape Town Fashion Week (#CTFW). Extraordinary South African fashion designers will reveal their 2011 summer collections at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from the 14th to the 16th of July.
African Fashion International (AFI) @AFI_sa, the Cape Town Fashion Council and SA and Cape Town Tourism have carefully selected the designers they invited to participate. And, if the previous collections of these designers are anything to go by, it would seem that those on the selection team have outstanding taste.
Here are 7 of the designers that have been invited whose 2011 collections are sure to be awesome and whose talents are most definitely worth celebrating.
Michelle Ludek’s designs amaze me. Stylish, timeless and comfortable – what more could a girl ask for? Her pieces are always made from fabulous fabrics, they’re flattering, feminine and easy to wear.
Her collection for Cape Town Fashion Week was inspired by a trip to Mozambique, where the raw heat of the country has been translated into colour, prints and a level of comfort.
Tailored pieces will be paired with her signature draped knit pieces. The silhouettes are longer: maxi dressed in bold floral prints have pleated details.
Tart is a lady’s range that is simple, stylish and oh so wearable. The brand evolved from t-shirts to summer dresses to cocktail dresses without missing a beat.
Tart has infused leisurewear with style. Soft, fluid fabrics are cleanly cut into simple silhouettes and imbibed with youthful energy with the use of splashes of colour and bold accessories.
Tart creates affordable feel-good garments that you can just slip on and go. I can’t wait to see what their 2011 collection holds!
Gavin Rajah is one of South Africa’s top fashion designers. He is an extraordinary man who is passionate about art, music, fashion and food. Gavin founded Cape Town Fashion Week and is a strategic marketing expert and entrepreneur as well as a fashion designer. Gavin manages to not only design spectacular fashion for men and women, but also to run one of South Africa’s leading events companies.
His eye for quality, innovation and superior craftsmanship is his signature and, no doubt, his Summer 2010/2011 collection will knock our socks off!
Abigail Betz believes that fashion is “our silent means of expression”. She is fast becoming South Africa’s couture queen with her stunning, innovative dresses and wedding gowns.
Abigail’s latest collection made its first appearance in Paris this year, introducing the international fashion community to her romantic, feminine designs that are epitomized by their strong lines, rich textures and exquisite detail.
I’m sure it is impossible to not feel like a princess in one of Abigail’s gowns.
Lisp is inspired by the youthful spirit of Rock ‘n Roll. The daring confident designs will have you looking, and feeling, like the rock star you are.
Lisp is the creation of Cape Town based designer, Oriel Barnard, whose influences include music icons, youth culture, the 70’s, glamour and grunge.
Word has it that the image of girls in feminine dresses with worn out boots has enthused Oriel’s designs for Spring/Summer.
Lalesso was launched in 2007 by young Cape Town designers Alice Heusser and Olivia Kennaway.
The brand has grown phenomenally in a very short time and promises to be a fashion force to be reckoned with. Already the brand has concession space at the famous Oxford Circus Topshop in London, been featured at two fashion shows at Pret a Porter in Paris, made it through to the final round for the New Generation Show at London Fashion Week and had celebrities like Kate Moss and Sienna Miller wearing their garments.
It is exclusively a summer and lifestyle clothing brand that is one of the first totally carbon zero fashion brands in the world. Garments are vibrant, care-free and comfortable. Roll on summer!
Undacova is a well-designed and fun range of underwear and sleepwear products created by two guys (yes…as in men) in Cape Town. They have paired African spirit with cutting edge design principles to create a very definitive look. Striking colour combinations, bold graphics, sexy silhouettes and a tongue-in-cheek character are coupled with superb attention to fit, form and function.
Christian Kilchling and Percy Ndaba create comfortable and edgy fashion underwear, loungewear and sleepwear products for both men and women. The men’s range is inspired by 70’beach holidays and sailors; and the womanswear collection by Love! Retro one pieces, “girlie” knickers and boyfriend tee’s with teasing logo’s and signature statement prints will be on the runway this season.
